BC Rich founder Bernardo Chavez Rico (1941-1999) began as a flamenco and classical guitarist making acoustic guitars in his father’s Los Angeles shop in the early 19605. In 1969 he built his first electrics-Gibson copies-before moving on to through-neck, pointy-shaped solidbodies with onboard pre-amps and lots of switches. His guitars became popular among heavy guitarists like Tony lommi, Rick Derringer, Nikki Sixx, Blackie Lawless, Kerry King, and Lita Ford. Now owned by Hanser Music Group, BC Rich continues to produce guitars in radical shapes in the United States, China, and Korea. Its "Handcrafted Shop” recently recreated BC Rich’s first four original guitar designs--the Seagull, Mockingbird, Bich, and Eagle-to mark the fortieth anniversary of the company's first electrics. The shop also handbuilds guitars to customers' own designs.
