Paulino Bernabe (1932-2007) became interested in guitar building while learning
classical guitar. in 1954 he became an apprentice in the Ramirez workshop, in Madrid, Spain, rising to head artisan. In 1969 he began building guitars on his own account. While rooted in the
Madrid school, he began to innovate, employing more complex strutting systems and using unusual woods, including flame maple, pear, and camphorwood. In 1977 Bernabe's son, also
Paulino (born 1960), joined him as his apprentice. He continues to build fine guitars in a workshop in the north of Madrid.
